CASS HALLIDAY
Cass Halliday was born in Ebberston on 26th February 1765 and died 18th March 1818
He was Master of the 'Orion' a ship of the fleet at the battle of Trafalger in 1805 and afterwards he followed Lord Collingwood as Master of the 'Queen' 'Ocean' and 'Ville de Paris' and became Master of the Fleet. Upon retirement from the sea, he became suprintendant of Portsmouth Dockyard.
He is buried at St Mary's Church Scarborough, in front of the main door.
His brother Thomas is buried in St Marys Church Ebberston opposite the main door.
Cass's only daughter Jane married into a ship building family in Scarborough.
Betty Foster who currently lives in Perth, Australia and whose husband is the great, great, grandson of Cass Halliday has also traced her husband's mother, who lived in the lighthouse on Scarborough harbour when it was shelled by the Germans in World War 1. Her father, Captain Walter Pentland Cass Smith was the Harbour Master at the time.
Betty has a 29 foot paying pennant from the 'Ville de Paris'. A log book, minature and letter of resignation from Cass Halliday. They were valued at 100,000 dollars when she appeared on the Antiques Roadshow, when it visited Melbourne Australia in 2005. It was broadcast in the UK on 12 March 2006
